This question has been asked several times to me by some persons, so I decided to work on it and I came out with these:
You sometimes make decisions by setting plans, goals and targets that may change your life, academics, family, business, relationships etc.Sometimes you go as far as seeking external assistance to reach these goals .For instance a drug addict who is determined to quit drugs may engage in daily or weekly counselling or enrol in a rehabilitation centre. A student whose main aim is to reach her academic goals will also engage in tutorials on subjects she may find difficult. You know it's not easy but you still pull harder. At first, you may have those burning feelings of getting your desired goal. These are caused by your contact with those things that inspire or drives you. It may be inspiring stories of persons sharing similar problems with you, it may be an encouraging word from someone, inspirational or motivational videos etc. That moment you just want to start something but on the long-run you lose commitment, you feel lost in your fight , you feel discouraged, it feels as if you've started from the scratch. I've come up with few reasons why you lose determination on the long-run
1. Forgetting your past mistakes: I know you'd be like "am meant to forget my past mistakes and move on". Yes but we get blinded by "moving on" and leaving the essential lessons to be learnt from our past mistakes. First, "the causes of those mistakes". When we make mistakes that affects our lives, it hurts us badly that we try as much as possible to forget them. But for a moment, analyse the causes of those problems, why they were made and also where they led you.
The pain shouldn't be your life's killer but maker, bearing in mind that you cannot erase those marks caused, but you can change them into beautiful success stories. This can keep you going, any time you feel like giving up, think about who you were, what you've become and who you aspire to be. Let those marks keep you moving. Let the humiliation you went through spark a fire of determination not resentment to succeed.
A blog, Darun Ihsan Humanitarian centre, posted a story about an ex-drug addict, Azaam, not his real name though, who was a victim of drug addiction for years, had his life destroyed but decided to take a great step of quitting drugs. It wasn't easy but he pulled through.
Trying to fit in his shoes, I could say that there must have been times when he wanted to back down but kept the pain drug addiction caused him as his motivation. Now, he is over drugs.Use the pain as fuel and keep going
2. Associating with the wrong kind of persons: During your pursuit for greatness you encounter people of different kind, some close friends, colleagues while others, acquaintances. It's your decision to choose those who you would spend quality time with. For instance in your workplace you are expected to work in accordance with your colleagues but that doesn't mean you have to be with everyone, you select those who work healthily to help boost your working efficiency not those that would make you lose interest in your job. This way you reach your ethical targets. Same goes for every aspect of your life.
As a student, you want to be a topper, knowing fully well that you are a below average student. You have to associate with toppers in school. Doing this, you'll have to cut off some relationships, maybe a friend who adds no value to your life, only talks about partying, doing drugs, irrelevant stories etc, wasting your precious time that could be used to instil knowledge, perform academic activities and so on.Sometimes it seems difficult, maybe you've grown to attached to them, but you have to do so if they don't assist you positively on the long run. Surrounding yourself with people with negative vibes will make you lose determination on the long run.Choose friends that impact in you positively
3. Losing a touch of motivation: Before embarking on this journey to success, you know it's not going to be easy at all. On the long run, when challenges comes you feel threatened and weak. Try as much as possible to get motivated. You can get motivational books, subscribe to motivational channels on YouTube, join an association that can keep you motivated in line to what you are facing etc. just get connected. Talk to someone and also yourself, yes it sound stupid, but do so. Encourage yourself, push harder, shut the door of discouragement and always tell yourself the truth, it will help you defeat your weaknesses. When I see persons with determination to change their lives for good, I adore them, because It's not an easy decision. It takes only a strong heart to do so. If you have decided to do so, you are indeed strong, yes you are. The road to success is narrow and crooked, challenges are bound to come which makes you feel weak, then idea of giving up tends to creep in. If this happens, know it that it's okay but what's not okay is you accepting defeat. My mentor once said to me "It's not over yet until it's over" sound confusing huh?, but read it carefully.Little I could put down though but I hope it changes your life.Take this also: Remember, your happiness depends only on you not your money nor possessions but YOU.
